What Exactly is Pepper Spray?

You know pepper spray is often used in self-defense or riot control, and you know the effects—pain, tears, coughing, and sometimes temporary blindness. But what is it that makes this concoction so potent?

Pepper spray is mostly made of capsaicin, which is extracted from plants in the Capsicum genus. Because chilis are included in this category, the name “pepper” was attached, and it officially became “pepper spray.”

Packaged and sold in canisters, pepper spray became a favored tool among those interested in self defense. The canisters are often made small enough that they can be concealed in one’s pocket or purse. In some cases, they are even made so small that they are constructed into keychain pepper spray.

Pepper Shot Tri PackPepper Shot Pepper Spray Tri-Pack

Pepper Shot™ is a 10% pepper spray rated at 2 million scoville heat units and made with a very fine grain that is more effective than the coarser grains of most other pepper sprays. In addition to causing an attacker pain, Pepper Shot swells the mucous membranes, which makes breathing difficult, and swells the veins in the eyes, causing the eyes to close. These effects last 20-30 minutes and cause no permanent damage. All sprays have locking actuators for extra safety.

“The Wildfire 18% formula is one of the hottest, and more importantly, the fastest reacting spray we’ve ever tested. This spray immediately permeates the pros of the skin, closes the eyes, and inhibits the respiratory system. What makes this product so effective is the purity of the pepper used in formulating this product…only food grade 3 million or 4 million scoville heat units pepper used.” Larry Harris, Washington Labs

The Wildfire 18%  Pepper Spray is hot, hot, hot. Wildfire is 18% Oleo Resin Capsicum (pepper) - a derivative of 3 millon Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

OC is a natural chemical derived from various hot pepper plants and is the most effective spray. (see blog on Defense Spray Types 5/1/08)

Wildfire 18% pepper spray comes in 5 sizes.

Defense Spray Types

Using Pepper Spray

The most popular, non-lethal, personal defense product today is the self defense sprays

There are three (3) basic chemical compositions used in sprays today and are:

  1. CS - ORTHOCHLOROBENZALMALONITRILE
  2. CN – ALPHACHLOROACETAPHENONE
  3. OC – OLEORESIN CAPSICUM

OC is the newest of the three and the only one that you should consider for self defense. There are combinations of the above but I would recommend buying sprays that contain OC. CS and CN are irritants to membrane tissues. They cause stinging pain and tearing and take from 5 to 30 seconds to be effective. If the assailant being sprayed is drunk, on drugs, or suffering from certain mental disorders, there is a possibility that the spray will have no or little effect. These conditions could raise the individual’s tolerance for pain, thusly; these sprays are not a wise choice in all instances.

OC is not an irritant, it is an inflammatory agent. When an assailant is sprayed with OC two (2) things happen instantly. First, the eyes clamp shut, hard, but if they do manage to open them they still have a hard time of seeing, because OC causes temporary blindness. Second, the OC spray causes an instant inflammation of the breathing tissues, restricting all but the amount of breathing that is needed for a person to live. All the conditions are temporary, but have the effect to the assailant as running head on into a speeding train. The OC works well in the conditions listed above where the CS and CN could have little effect.

In addition to not being as effective as OC, CN and CS take longer to wear off. But, all sprays have shown no permanent damage to the assailant.

OC is a natural chemical derived from various hot pepper plants (pepper spray). It is not toxic and will not harm the human body in the strength used in personal defense OC sprays.
