If I could pick one computing problem I'd like to see Bulldozer solve...
Mini-supercomputing in one chip. Even though it's only by itself and not like real supercomputers which are many chips linked together, something like a combination of several cores and Hyperthreading-on-steroids would be very useful. Hyperthreading was good, but the ability to simulate a lot of threads (not just a few) would greatly benefit engineering and scientific apps.
I hope it brings the same revolutionary speeds as the old Claw Hammer did 5 years ago. AMD could use a big performance gain. Too bad it probably isn't gonna be out for at least a year.
I still don't see how whatever they make can top Intel... intel already has their 32 core and 22nm chips prototyped, and most likely are working with the industrial and mechanical engineers to get the plans ready for 'mass' production. Those puppies are essentialy super computing chips!!!
I'm unconvinced until I see something materialize on AMDs side :)
I know what I would like to see...
I would like to see something capable of graphics rendering and physics rendering in a multi-core processor. I think it is entirely possibly to place a GPU core and CPU core in a single design, and a pooled cache instead of using seperate cache on a per core basis giving the cores more flexibility. It's easy enough to tape out the concept so I don't see why it hasn't been done already. If I had the resources I'd do it myself :-P

Hopefully it will solve their financial problems!

HAHA! That was a good one.
When that starts to happen, I'm going to buy some AMD shares.
I would have to say it would probably be a multicore cpu (duh) with the graphics processor as one of the cores and a ton of onboard cache. If AMD comes out with somethng like that it would probably redefine the mainstreem market place. As far as a high performance gamer chip though i'm not sure. Ive heard rumors that AMD is heading to 16 cores.
But if they are looking for money most of it is made in the mainstream marketplace so by targeting the low/mid range market they can get themselves financially cabpable of producing more powerful chips to compete with intel.
I really hope that this Bulldozer will not be 'bulldozed' by Intels next CPU

yea would like to see more of competition from amd in the future!

Mhmm. Unfortunately, all of AMD's competition these days is from the past. K8 is from 2003 and K10 is mostly just modified architecture. That's the hope we have for AMD, that all of these years will pay off. Once something more radical than K10 comes out we may yet see competition in all its glory.
is any one else reminded of the 2900? the ati 2900 was supposed to be this amazing video card that would dwarf everything out there and that was a failure... im hoping that amd bulldozer will actually live up to the hype but i wont hold my breath. i learned my lesson holding my breath for the 2900

Why!?!
I understand that competition is good.. etc.. but I still don't understand why people feel that AMD has to bounce back at all.. Intel is doing very well performance wise at the moment, and prices are reasonable (Q6600s and Q9450s really arn't that overpriced)...
Even though people may argue AMD used to have better processors (mainly for gaming... pwning FSB).. I have always disagreed. Intel has always had the better parts of the silicon wafers.. usually more engineering... and is just overall a BIG company. Ok.. so AMD was a gaming powerhouse for a while, but servers and solid workstations were pentiums (from what I can recall anyway)... now, we simply have Intel stepping in the gap that AMD once filled, and I don't think we are at a loss for it

Competition is good because it advances the product and keeps the prices down. A world without AMD or IBM, where only Intel made the CPU's, would probably leave us with the current top-dawg processor a Pentium II 300Mhz for $600!

not just for competition and the advancemant of technology but the biggest thing for me if to have a option. i dont like not have one and would like varity in the cpu market.
Willard, that really isn't a question worth asking. You answered it in your first sentence "competition is good". Intel is doing nice right now, but AMD is not dead yet. They still sell CPUs. If they get to where VIA is, then enjoy watching the prices skyrocket. Intel could come out with new generations of CPUs but merely keep them hidden away and release new periodical increases of old technology every year or two. Not that Intel has shown signs of this mentality, but I for one do not want to wait for them to have the chance. Nor would I want AMD to be the only CPU company. It's just not cool.
indeed, if we have one company for anything prices and performance will suffer, look at the performance of the p4 ee compared to amd back in the day,,, it was a world of difference (also amd does really well in servers and work stations :-p it wasnt all pentiums at all, since xeon is the server side of pentium ) i admit intel is doing very well right now, but that could just be for right now. intel would want to bankrupt amd and the best way to bankrupt the competition is to offer better price-performance, but once the competition is gone, say good bye to all those perks.

Here is my point:
Don't get excited about AMD... they can't compete. End of story (my opinion). Ya.. they sell processors... and ya... they arn't bankrupt... but Intel is steaming forward with better architecture and engineering with or without AMDs presence.
Ya... competition can drive down prices... but Intel chips will ALWAYS cost more than AMD (like they always have)... and for the most part, Intel's high end chipsets have always been better. I also think most people over-exaggerate the "one company dominating the market" phenomenon.. i've talked to a few computer engineers (and some students), they all agree that we won't get completely price raped if Intel is the only player. Intel will continue to have their higher range processors and lower range... We arn't in the times of one flagship processor per company like in the Pentium age, there are multiple lines that each have a separate price structure. If AMD dropped out tomorrow, I really don't think prices would sky rocket... components and systems are so cheap, and consumers arn't that stupid.
Plus, technology isn't only driven by competition (although it is a healthy contributor)... Intel's 2 year cycle of new architectures will have a few cycles before they begin to slow down. I doubt they would "hide" architectures... with each new architecture they release just offers them another opportunity to overcharge for their 'high' end cpus like they did with kentsfield, penryn, and soon, nehalem. Engineering isn't that shallow.. sure, money is important... but remember that commerical and consumer electronics is not the only application. There will ALWAYS be more research progressing despite market progress.. that is what academia is for :)
I'm fine with AMDs existence.. just not with people pretending like they are going to have some breakthrough technology out of nowhere with no research or proven designs around.
I do not see any progress from AMD,but maybe ATI will make it worth and will release something better than Nvidia has to offer
You need to buy ur Shares before they go up :p
